Who is Yellow Jambhala?

Jambhala is a Buddhist wealth deity with roots in the older Indian figure Kubera, guardian of the north and lord of yakshas—nature beings associated with hidden treasure and the fertility of the earth. As Buddhist traditions traveled through India, Nepal, Tibet, and the Himalayan world, Jambhala took several colored forms. Yellow Jambhala became the most familiar: regal, golden, and unmistakably substantial.

Jambhala’s mongoose therefore tells a compact story: what once hoarded and threatened has been transformed into something that releases riches. Instead of clutching treasure, the animal pours it outward.

The story turns the meaning of wealth upside down. Abundance is not measured only by what remains in your hand. It is revealed by what can move through your hand without destroying your sense of safety.

Yellow Jambhala usually appears golden-yellow, dressed like a king and ornamented with jewels. In his right hand he holds a bijapuraka, a citron-like fruit associated with fertility and fruitful results. His left hand holds the mongoose. One foot may rest upon a conch shell or treasure vessel. These attributes distinguish him from other forms, including Black Jambhala, whose imagery is more forceful and obstacle-clearing.

Traditionally, practitioners seek his blessing for relief from poverty, steady livelihood, resources, generosity, and conditions that support spiritual practice. The ethical center matters: wealth gained through exploitation contradicts the generosity he represents. His image is therefore well suited to business owners, but also asks a difficult question—what will prosperity allow you to contribute?
